Walmer Golf Club, Gqeberha (P.E.), South Africa; Where It All Began

WGC is a historic 9 hole course in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth. It was founded in 1897 and has been a permanent view for the residents. Before becoming an estate, it was a public course where people were able to walk their dogs and enjoy the area. Unfortunately, as with everything over the past 3 decades, it became business focussed and became an estate. Despite this the atmosphere is still incredibly relaxed and the greens in a condition I do not think they have ever been in during the 100+ year existence of the golf club.

It is not particularly long, but with the wind that can pick up in its home city, it doesn’t need to be to offer up a challenge. The course allows for a variety of strategic miss shots, it will leave you out of position, but still able to make a par and recover. The toughest holes in my opinion being the par 3s. Hole 4 has OB on the right and an intimidating valley which really messes with my psyche personally. The other is the 6th. A short par 3 over water, the challenge often being club selection due to the wind on the day.

The toughest hole for me is unfortunately the 9th. It is tightly squeezed against the OB line with trees narrowing the tee shot. It’s never suited my eye and has ruined many a career round for me. This course fights back, even to the very end. The fairways and rough still struggle at times, but this is more due to the climate than negligence on the part of the Greenkeeping team who have in my opinion produced a miracle on the greens. I would thoroughly recommend visiting this course if you get the chance. You’ll have a blast and the 19th is well priced with great facilities in the clubhouse.

how to get there

The course is located in Walmer in Port Elizabeth, getting there is not a problem if you are renting a car or have grab on your mobile device. As you will possibly want to enjoy the 19th hole, I would suggest an Uber. This would be my suggestion for all courses in Port Elizabeth.

price and rating

The price is by far the best value for money I know and has always been this way. At R200 for 18 holes it is an absolute bargain. It does have a soft spot and has been improving every time I play, a solid 7 toes out of ten.
